Govt Mulls More Desalination Vegetation Along Tamil Nadu's Coastline

Tamil Nadu govt is thinking over a offer to set up a sequence of desalination vegetation across its 1,000km lengthy shoreline following extreme exploitation of groundwater sources in the seaside places.

While Chennai Metrowater has set up two desalination vegetation in Minjur and Nemmeli with a potential to cure 100 thousand ltrs of the water a day, Tamil Nadu drinking the water and waterflow and drainage panel has recognized a place at Ramanathapuram. Apart from Chennai, there are 12 seaside regions, such as Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.

The condition has already taken projects to set up two vegetation at Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin regions on Build-Own-Operate-Transfer foundation. "But with the increasing specifications in the seaside places, it is suggested to have a sequence of vegetation with a potential to cure 50-100 thousand ltrs a day in a phased way," formal sources said. The strategy is that when these vegetation fulfill the regional specifications, the remote stream sources could be completely redirected to internal regions. The preliminary calculate is that 15.47tmcft of the water could be provided from 100MLD potential vegetation in each of the 12 regions.
